Welcome to the captivating world of Newhall Estate, where love stories come alive! In June 2023, I had the incredible privilege of photographing the wedding of Samantha and Jamie, two radiant brides whose special day unfolded amidst the breathtaking charm of Newhall Estate, less than an hour’s drive from Edinburgh.
Unveiling the timeless Beauty of Newhall Estate
As I drove onto the grounds of Newhall Estate, I was instantly captivated by its exquisite charm. The property feels very private with a long drive leading up to the main house, and extra cottages and a bed and breakfast are tucked amidst the greenery. Nestled within 1,100 acres of magnificent grounds, this gem of a venue is a testament to Scotland’s rich history and natural splendor. Owned by the Kennedy family, who have lovingly preserved the estate for generations, Newhall Estate offers a sense of grandeur and elegance that makes for an ideal wedding setting.

A Historic Haven: Newhall House
Newhall House, the heart of the estate, dates back to 1703 when it was lovingly crafted by David Forbes. Its elegant architecture and rich history provide a captivating setting for weddings and celebrations. Each room within Newhall House tells a unique story, with subtle nods to the estate’s past and a touch of whimsy inspired by Allan Ramsay’s renowned poem, The Gentle Shepherd. The walled garden, nestled within the estate, is a hidden treasure that boasts both visual splendor and a picture-perfect backdrop for unforgettable photographs.
The main house itself is quite large, making it the perfect place to get ready. The brides each had a large room with plenty of natural light to get ready in with their bridesmaids before making their way to the ceremony location via golfcart although it’s only a few minutes walk away.
Nature's PlaygrounD: Exploring the Country House Grounds
The land itself is massive – with plenty of gorgeous nooks and crannies to explore and of course, to photograph! From the ethereal Glen Walk, which inspired countless verses in The Gentle Shepherd, to the serene North Esk reservoir, the grounds of Newhall Estate offer endless possibilities for capturing love and joy amidst nature’s embrace.
Regardless of the season of your wedding, the exclusive-use country house looks amazing in all weather and has plenty of indoor and outdoor space to move between.
After Samantha and Jamie’s ceremony was complete, we headed back to the main house for a confetti throw, followed by a drinks reception and portrait session for the brides. The walled garden was a particular favourite of mine to photograph!

The recently renovated Carriage House where the ceremony took place, had both rustic charm and modern amenities, providing a warm and inviting atmosphere for Samantha, Jamie, and their loved ones to revel in the magic of their special day. The reception rooms within Newhall House, such as the drawing room and dining room, offer an exquisite blend of elegance and sophistication, creating an intimate ambiance for cherished moments with family and friends.
