Christmas Proposal Ideas
Forget Valentine’s Day (too cliché), Christmas is the ultimate romantic occasion to ask that important question.
Because most of us get to slow down and cosy up during the holidays, there is ample time to plan and execute a super romantic proposal. So for those looking for a little inspo, take note….
Say it in Lights
You don’t have to go all out and pop the question with skywriting! On the contrary, some pretty proposal lights in amongst the rest of your Christmas decorations can make for a magical moment on Christmas morning.
Got a coin?
An irresistible proposal doesn’t have to cost a lot of money. In fact, it can be done for under £10 with a ‘Will you marry me?’ scratchcard – the perfect solution for those truly wanting to surprise their spouse.
To add a more festive element, why not pop the scratchcard into a beautiful Christmas card or gift box?
On your knee in front of a tree
And not just any old tree – how about a Christmas tree farm? A chilly day out at the local Christmas tree farm can be a memorable experience – especially when armed with hot chocolate and an important question to ask your special someone.

Christmas card
Card giving is sadly becoming less of a tradition at Christmas (we mean, as long as the cards are made from recycled paper, what’s the issue?!) but a personalised ‘Will you marry me?’ card is bound to be a hit.
Get your furry friend involved
Wait until you have your first snow of the season and, if you have a dog, why not take a winter wonderland walk with the pup who could do the honours by carrying the ring on their collar?
A kiss under the mistletoe
If you’re both a fan of traditional Christmas romanticism, why not surprise your partner with what they think will just be a cheeky kiss under the mistletoe? Imagine their face when they see you get down on one knee and whip out an engagement ring!
Love at first slope
If you’re planning a winter getaway, but want to keep it festive-themed, consider a ski trip somewhere super romantic, like the French Alps.
In the interest of safety, we don’t recommend popping the question while whizzing down a mountain, but perhaps a romantic chairlift over the snow-crested slopes might set the scene.
Conversely, those needing a bit of sun, sea, and, errr, sangria, could ask that all-important question on a beach in the Bahamas with a cocktail in hand and soft, white sand between your toes.
Off to the market
Christmas markets are a wonderful way to get into the Christmas spirit, but with the added inclusion of some warm mulled wine and a wedding ring, you’ve got yourself a good setup for a ‘Hell yes!’.

Say it in snow
Depending on where you are in the UK, snow over Christmas isn’t always a given, so a little trip to the far corners of Scotland could be a wise shout.
Once you’ve found a lovely snowy spot, plan accordingly to have the proposal written out in the snow before you both arrive (perhaps, enlist a pal to help).
This is a super romantic Christmas proposal idea for those wanting something a little different that doesn’t break the bank!
Puzzle proposal
Board game lovers, rejoice! There are so many cute and fun ‘Will you marry me?’ puzzles on the market to suit all styles and tastes. There are also puzzle piece levels for those wanting a quick proposal or something slower that takes more time to complete.
Christmas treasure/scavenger hunt
Ideal for those wanting something a little more unusual than the standard Christmas proposal ideas. This gives you, the planner, the opportunity to get your creativity cap on to create a scavenger hunt clue kit that leads your partner to the ultimate treasure – the engagement ring.
Why not put a festive spin on it by leaving clues in various Christmassy places like the Christmas tree, a local nativity scene, the Christmas market, or somewhere rural with snow-topped pine trees?!
The gift of all gifts
There’s something simple, sweet, and traditional about an engagement ring wrapped as a Christmas gift and we guarantee it’ll be your partner’s favourite gift ever – or that year, at least!
To conceal your plan a little, why not place the ring in a huge gift-wrapped box to really make it the ultimate surprise?!

Movie night proposal
At Wildling Weddings, we don’t believe every romantic gesture has to be extravagant, costly, and decked in bells and whistles – sometimes a quiet, cosy moment while snuggled up with your love, a mug of hot choccie, and your favourite Christmas flick can make for the perfect moment to pop the question.
Baby, you’re a firework
For those who do love a grand gesture, why not go all out and organise a romantic Christmas firework display with all your nearest and dearest?!
Bonus points if there is hot mulled wine!
A Christmas Carol
Christmas caroling is one of the old-time Christmas traditions that warms the nostalgic cockles of even the grinchiest of grinches!
And the best part? You don’t have to do the singing! Why not liaise with a local choir and get them to do the honours? Or in this case, sing the honours!
A surprise wreath
Christmas wreaths are one of the best ways to start getting into that festive spirit and you can use it to pop the question by telling your special someone there is a little something for them in the Christmas wreath when they get home – that little something being an engagement ring, of course.
Christmas breakfast in bed
Let’s face it – breakfast in bed is a lovely treat any time of the year, but Christmas morning with some carols playing, a glass of mimosa, and a certain question on your lips is sure to make this one stand out for years to come!
Deck the halls (and the tree)
Decorating the Christmas tree together can be super romantic, but hiding a small box with an engagement ring in amongst the decoration box will certainly up the wow factor.
Say it with sparkles
Plus a Polaroid camera….
A chilly night, a belly full of eggnog, and a group of your nearest and dearest to light up some sparklers while you (or your partner) snap a picture of them – once the Polaroid has printed, your partner will see the special message written in sparkles.
Secret Santa
If you and your family/pals are fans Secret Santa (great way to save on having to buy everyone a gift, FYI!), why not orchestrate it quietly with your group that your partner will be your gift recipient, giving you the opportunity to gift them with an engagement ring.
A winter wonderland photoshoot
A professional engagement photoshoot is the perfect way to document one of the most romantic and special moments of your relationship (an engagement photo also makes a beautiful homemade wedding invite!).
And you’ve come to the right place! For couples in or visiting the beautiful country of Scotland, there is an abundance of gorgeous places for a Christmastime proposal shoot.
Whether it’s in amongst the warm glow of the Edinburgh Christmas Market or somewhere a little more rural, like a mountain peak in Glencoe, I will make sure your proposal is captured in a way that is perfect for you and your special someone. Find out more here.
Christmas can be a lovely time to pop the question because many of us are feeling the festive cheer, spending time with our loved ones, and enjoying some time off of work, which can set the scene for a romantic proposal.
A festive proposal can be quite a divisive subject. While some may find the holiday period the perfect time to pop the question, others may find it something of a cliché. The trick is to find a way to subtly gauge how your partner feels about it before getting down on one knee.
Christmas provides the perfect opportunity to get creative with how you pop the question. Some ideas include:
- Having the ring box wrapped nicely as a stocking filler.
- Stashing the ring in a Christmas cracker. Just make sure you remember which one it is and give it to your partner and not Great Auntie Mildred!
- Hide it in the tree – engagement ornaments really are a thing!
- Unleash your creative side and suggest making each other an advent calendar and pop the ring in door number 25.
- An ice skating rink – particularly an outdoor one – can make a movie-style romantic proposal.
